The Association of Health Related Behaviors with Obesity
Kim Hye-Jung

Abstract
Background: A number of studies have clearly documented that obesity is important risk factor for health. It more need the necessity of physician¡¯s intervention, since obesity population are expected to keep increasing. Also it was reported that the obesity group be more susceptible to unhealthy behaviors than the nonobesity. So I carried out this study to find out the association of sociodemographic factors and some health related behaviors with obesity.

Methods: From September 1998 to July 1999. I interviewed 508 adult subjects those who visited Wonkwang University Hospital for health check up and their companions with self-administered questionnaires and took body weight and height. Sociodemographic feature included age, sex, education, job, economic status, religion, marital status. Subjects were classified as obese and nonobese by body mass index. Healthy behaviors included breakfast, exercise, drinking alcohol, sleep, smoking, eating between meals and added number of parity and artificial abortion in females to them.

Results: 261 men and 247 women took part in the study. The rate of obesity was 20.7%(54 men) and 25.9%(64 women). There were positive association with the economic and marital status and negative association with the level of education. Among the unhealthy behaviors that were significantly associated with obesity were skipping breastfast, nonexercise and eating between meals. In male subjects, the prevalence of obesity was positively associated with in university students, the level of economic status, marital status and eating between meals. In women the prevalence of obesity was inversely associated with the level of education, and positively associated with marital status and eating between meals and number of parity and artificial abortion.

Conclusions: The recognition of socioeconomic and behavioral factors helps the planning of effective treatment and preventive programs tailored for subjects at obesity. Obesity was found to be partially associated with sociodemographic and healthy behaviors. Primary physicians who managed and counselled the obesity need to consider these associations and therefore comprehensive approaches are demanded not only for health promotion but also prevention and treatment of obesity.
